Keynote: Update on ONC and CDC Joint Data Modernization Activities

ONC and CDC have been collaborating closely on strategies to modernize our public health data infrastructure to better enable our nation to respond to existing and emerging threats. During this session, Dr. Dan Jernigan and Dr. Micky Tripathi will provide an update on efforts contributing to the CDC Data Modernization Initiative. The session will highlight progress made in ONC-CDC collaboration over the last year, and will detail ONC-CDC priorities for work to come.

Plenary Panel Session: FHIR API Interoperability – a FHIR-Side Chat

HL7®’s FHIR® standard has ignited a flurry of innovation and development contributing to profound changes in the US healthcare system. Payers, providers, and other stakeholders are rapidly deploying FHIR APIs that enable more efficient information exchange and enhance patient access to their own health records. This session features three organizations implementing or using FHIR APIs to transform healthcare. Panelists will share how their organizations are utilizing FHIR, challenges they’ve had to overcome, and lessons learned along the way.

Option 1: Aligning USCDI, FHIR US Core, and other Health IT Standards

This session will provide an overview of the recently published United States Core Data for Interoperability Version 3 (USCDI v3) and its relationship to FHIR US Core and C-CDA, the health IT standards which enable exchange of USCDI data. This session will discuss the interrelated processes of updating each of these standards in a way that promotes adoption of these newer standards while minimizing development and implementation burden.

Option 2:  Interoperability with Emergency Medical Services

This session will provide an overview of standards for data sharing and integration among Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and hospitals and other health care systems. This session will discuss where EMS has come over the past two years as it relates to pre-hospital data sharing (i.e., NEMSIS mapping, state experiences), and opportunities for health systems, HIEs, EHRs and others.

Option 3: Strategies and Challenges When Registering a FHIR Application

This session will discuss the process of registering a third-party application from EHR vendor and app developer perspectives. This will be an interactive discussion around strategies and challenges EHR vendors and app developers may face when registering apps, showcasing app registration practices in real-time to highlight different registration approaches, and identifying factors that commonly cause errors.
