The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) hosted the 2nd Interoperability Forum on August 6th- 8th, 2018 in Washington, DC. This event brought people together from ONC, our federal partners, the healthcare industry, and the technology sector to:
- Learn about recent efforts to advance interoperability nationwide
- Identify concrete actions in response to current interoperability barriers
Attendees heard keynotes from industry influencers and had the opportunity to view demos showcasing innovative solutions. On the second day, attendees participated in tracks focused on various aspects of interoperability such as the deployment of application programming interfaces (APIs), improving clinicians’ experience with interoperability, patient matching, security and more.
Co-led by industry leaders and supported by ONC experts, the tracks provided an opportunity to discuss the latest issues and identify actions that can be taken to address key barriers to interoperability in a group setting. On the third and final day of the meeting, key next steps and highlights from the day-long tracks were reported out by track leads to all attendees.

Led by Eric Heflin of The Sequoia Project this track identified areas of consensus regarding patient matching definitions and showcased innovative matching technologies and metrics.

Led by Dr. Julia Adler-Milstein of UCSF, Hans Buitendijk of Cerner/EHRA, and Dr. Walter Sujansky of Sujansky Associates, this track: (1) prioritized aspects of interoperability that need to be newly or more precisely measured to track progress for informing policy; (2) identified ways to leverage existing data to address these priorities and specific stakeholder actions to generate such measures; (3) identified novel approaches and specific stakeholder actions to address remaining gaps that are critical to tracking progress and informing policy.

Led by Heather Flannery of Blockchain in Healthcare Global under IEEE ISTO and the HIMSS Blockchain Task Force, Don Thibeau of the OpenID Foundation and John Moehrke Co-chair of the HL7 Security Workgroup, this track highlighted the application of blockchain technology for security-related applications and security mechanisms for APIs related to consent and privacy.

Led by Lisa Nelson of MaxMD and Brett Marquard of WaveOne, this track reviewed the current and future plans to advance content interoperability via the US Core for Data Interoperability and gathered attendee feedback on quality of exchanged content and data types that are of emerging importance.

Led by Dr. Holly Miller of MedAllies and Evelyn Gallego of EMI Advisors, this track focused on current experience and upcoming efforts (e.g., 360X) to enhance clinicians’ use of electronically exchanged information in areas such as acute to ambulatory discharge, closed-loop referrals and shared care plans.

Led by Jitin Asnaani of Commonwell Health Alliance and Dr. Josh Mandel of Harvard Medical School, this track highlighted efforts to enable nationwide interoperability such as through national networks and open APIs, identified barriers and technical issues limiting their implementation and use, and made recommendations to address the identified issues.
