Why did you pursue an employment opportunity with HHS through the Pathways to Public Service program?

I really wanted to get hands-on policy experience within public health, and I thought working at HHS would be a wonderful opportunity to do so. I was introduced to some of HHS’ policy work after reading the Department’s Equity Action Plan. Looking at the different policy initiatives got me excited about the equity-based work HHS was doing to improve community outcomes. So, when I got the notification that there was an opening within the Public Health and Social Services Branch, I dropped everything to apply.

What most excites you about this Pathways to Public Service internship?

I love being able to see all the different policy initiatives at a higher level and learn how critical funding decisions are made. I currently work with the Administration for Children and Families, and I have had a wonderful time learning more about their programs, especially those that support Tribes and Tribal Organizations. Moreover, it has been amazing to engage with different leadership. Attending meetings and briefing Deputy Secretary Palm and the Secretary’s Budgeting Council was an incredible experience that I won’t forget.

How has your university/major prepared you for the work you will be doing within your agency?

Through my graduate coursework and role as a tutor for a research methods and data analysis course, I gained valuable experience in identifying key policy outcomes and communicating them in a concise manner. A lot of my coursework revolves around summarizing policies and providing cost-effective recommendations, which mirrors the work I’ve done within the Office of Budget. In particular, the practice I’ve had collaborating with teams on these assignments has been very useful for my role here.

How did the Pathways program help you navigate your federal career with HHS? (Tell us about mentors you had, events you attended, resources shared, interviews, and the hiring process)

Throughout the summer, the services team has provided me with extensive support and mentoring. Everyone is very patient and kind, which has enabled me to succeed as an analyst.  I am always allowed to meet with different officials within whatever policy areas I am interested in. This has taught me so much about essential programs within other agencies such as the Indian Health Service and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. I am very grateful for the Pathways program and look forward to furthering my career within HHS.
